Two people were killed and at least 20 others injured after a coach bus carrying Royal Jordanian airline crew members overturned and crossed into oncoming traffic on the Long Island Expressway in Queens late Monday night.
The crash occurred around 11:45 p.m. near exit 16 at Greenpoint Avenue in Maspeth. The westbound coach bus was transporting 15 crew members from Royal Jordanian Flight 8261, which had arrived at Kennedy Airport from Amman, Jordan, just before 9:45 p.m. The crew was being transported to their hotel accommodations.
According to authorities, the bus first collided with two vehicles before striking the center divider. The bus then overturned into the eastbound lanes, where it struck two additional vehicles. The bus driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. One driver from the vehicles struck in the eastbound lanes was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The remaining injured passengers and vehicle occupants were transported to nearby hospitals. Royal Jordanian said one crew member died in the crash, while the remaining injured crew members were in stable condition and receiving medical care.
The bus driver was identified as a 35-year-old man. According to media reports citing unnamed sources, the driver had seven prior arrests, including for burglary, sexual abuse and forcible touching, and was registered as a level 2 sex offender.
The crash forced closure of portions of the Long Island Expressway and created significant traffic delays.
