A Frontier Airlines flight struck and killed a person on the runway at Denver International Airport on Friday night, sparking a partial engine fire that forced the aircraft to remain grounded.
Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321neo bound for Los Angeles International Airport, struck the unidentified pedestrian while taking off at 11:19 p.m., according to airport officials. The person was at least partially sucked into one of the aircraft's engines, igniting a brief fire, sources told ABC News.
Pilots aboard the flight reported the incident over radio communications. "Tower, Frontier 4345, we're stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire," the pilot said, according to audio obtained by the New York Post.
Smoke was reported inside the cabin, prompting pilots to abort the takeoff. Denver firefighters responded and extinguished the engine fire. The aircraft remained grounded following the incident.
The circumstances that led to the pedestrian being on the runway during takeoff were not detailed in available reports.
