A United Airlines flight arriving from Venice, Italy struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike while on final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Flight 169, operating a Boeing 767-400, was carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members when the incident occurred just after 2 p.m. The aircraft was on its way to Runway 29 when it made contact with the pole, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Despite the collision, the aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate under its own power. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members on board.

The strike damaged the light pole and a tractor-trailer traveling south on the turnpike. The truck's driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

United Airlines said in a statement that the aircraft sustained only minor damage. "Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft and we will investigate how this occurred," the airline said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will conduct an investigation into the incident. The Port Authority also said it is looking into how the collision occurred during the aircraft's approach to the airport.
