A 31-year-old woman was killed by an alligator while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River in Seminole County, just north of Orlando, on Sunday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The victim was swimming with her boyfriend and best friend in approximately 3 feet of water when an alligator bit her on both arms, FWC spokesperson Chad Weber said. The boyfriend made the 911 call and attempted to retrieve her from the alligator's mouth, Weber said at a news conference Monday. The woman died on the way to the hospital.

The attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Little Big Econ State Forest, nearly 30 miles from the coast. The three had been hiking when they stopped to swim in the river.

Two alligators in the area were subsequently captured — one measuring 12 feet long and the other 13 feet long. The FWC noted that 13 feet is considered a very large alligator.

Maj. Jay Russell with the FWC called the incident "incredibly tragic."

This fatal attack was part of a weeklong spree of alligator attacks in Florida across three inland waterways. One other person was killed and two additional people were seriously injured during the series of incidents, according to reports.
