A worker was found dead and two firefighters were injured after an explosion on a petroleum barge docked on Staten Island on Thursday, according to officials.
The FDNY said the explosion originated in a container on the barge Casablanca at 3249 Richmond Terrace between South and Arlington avenues in the Mariners Harbor section just after 2:30 p.m. The blast ignited a fire on the vessel.
Over 50 units and 160 fire, EMS and HAZMAT personnel responded to the incident. The fire reached a second alarm around 3:15 p.m. before being placed under control.
One worker was discovered dead on the barge. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. All other workers at the scene have been accounted for, officials said.
Neighbor Natasha Stallworth recorded video of the blast on the Citizen App immediately after hearing the initial explosion. She noted that the blast shook the entire neighborhood. In May 2026, another fatal explosion occurred at a nearby shipyard in the area.
