Explosion at Rio residential building injures four people

An explosion at a 13-story residential building on Rua Sá Ferreira in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, injured four people Wednesday afternoon around 4 p.m.

Firefighters from the Copacabana barracks (17º GBM) responded to the blast at the building, which contains 150 apartments across a basement level and multiple floors. Teams evacuated residents and conducted search and safety operations throughout the structure.

Four victims sustained minor to moderate injuries. Two were transported to Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto in the Gávea neighborhood, while the other two received treatment at the scene. As of Wednesday evening, no updated information on their health status had been released.

The explosion damaged the building's basement garage structure and two apartments on the second floor. One resident, Horácio da Silva, was in the garage at the time of the blast and sustained injuries to his forehead and arms.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. The Rio de Janeiro Civil Defense was called to assess structural integrity, while the Civil Police will determine what triggered the blast.
