President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, are tied at 45 percent support each in a potential runoff matchup, according to a poll released Saturday by Datafolha, a polling firm affiliated with the Grupo Folha media conglomerate.

The survey of 2,004 voters conducted May 12–13 found that 9 percent said they would cast null or blank votes, while 1 percent remained undecided about the October presidential election. The poll carries a 95 percent confidence level with a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.

The tie represents a narrowing of the gap between the two candidates compared to April, when Bolsonaro held a one-point advantage over Lula, 46 percent to 45 percent. The latest figures show the race remains highly competitive as the election approaches.

In a first-round scenario without the runoff effect, Lula appeared at 38 percent and Flávio Bolsonaro at 35 percent, according to the same Datafolha survey.

A separate finding from the same polling firm showed that 91 percent of Brazilian voters said they do not regret their 2022 presidential vote, whether they voted for Lula or Bolsonaro. Eight percent said they did regret their choice.
