Chipotle Mexican Grill said Tuesday it had removed jalapeños from some of its restaurants after identifying the peppers as a potential ingredient tied to a salmonella outbreak, replacing them with supplies from different growers.
The company said it began tracing ingredients through its supply chain after learning of a potential outbreak and identified jalapeños from a common lot as a possible source. The ingredient had been distributed to several food service retailers across multiple states.
"Out of an abundance of caution, we proactively removed the jalapenos from our restaurants and replaced them with product from different growers," Chipotle said in a statement. The company added that it was cooperating with public health authorities investigating the outbreak.
The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed it has identified 110 cases linked to the salmonella outbreak. Of the 84 Minnesotans interviewed as part of the investigation, 75 reported eating at Chipotle. Customers ate at the restaurant between June 14 and July 14, with most eating there between June 24 and July 2.
Chipotle said the Minnesota Department of Health has confirmed it has no ongoing concerns with Chipotle following the removal of the affected jalapeños.
Shares of Chipotle fell nearly 10% on Tuesday following the announcement. The stock closed approximately 7% lower in afternoon trading.
