Ford Motor announced Thursday that its new midsize electric truck will start at $28,350 and be called the Fathom, positioning itself as an affordable option in the EV truck market.
The Fathom is the first vehicle built on Ford's Universal Electric Vehicle, or UEV, platform. With destination and delivery charges of $1,595 added, the total starting price reaches $29,945, aligning with the $30,000 price target Ford had previously outlined for its upcoming electric vehicles.
The truck will be a fully featured vehicle, distinguishing it from competitors in the budget EV segment. It will include integrated Apple Maps running on a large, high-resolution touchscreen, along with support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The vehicle will accommodate five passengers.
Ford said preorders for the Fathom will begin in early 2027, with customer deliveries expected to start later that year.
The announcement comes as Ford pursues its UEV platform strategy despite a significant slowdown in EV adoption across the broader market. The platform represents what Ford has described as a "Model T moment," built on an innovative assembly approach designed to deliver vehicles at lower price points without sacrificing core functionality.
The Fathom's pricing and feature set position it competitively against other budget EV options. The Slate Truck, another ultra-affordable electric vehicle, starts at $24,950 but achieves that price by omitting numerous standard features, including power windows, a touchscreen, and a basic stereo system. Ford's approach with the Fathom prioritizes integrated technology and convenience features while maintaining a sub-$30,000 entry price.
