South Korea's envoy says Hyundai, Kia studying return to Russian market

South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are maintaining interest in the Russian automotive market and may be exploring pathways to return, according to Lee Sok-pae, South Korea's ambassador to Russia.

In statements to Russian media, Lee said the companies are likely conducting market research to understand how to re-enter Russia. He noted that Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors remain "extremely interested" in the Russian automobile market and are possibly studying options for their return.

The ambassador emphasized, however, that the primary obstacle to resuming operations remains the Ukraine conflict. Lee stated that resolution of the conflict is the main condition for the automakers' return, and that without such a resolution, the comeback would be an extremely difficult task. He added that until the conflict is settled, the return of South Korean automakers to the Russian market will remain highly challenging.

Before 2022, Hyundai and Kia held the second and third positions in Russian vehicle sales, behind the Lada brand. Following the onset of the conflict, both companies suspended production and supplies in Russia.

In subsequent developments, Hyundai sold its Russian factories to the AGR group in 2024. In January 2026, Hyundai lost the right to repurchase those facilities.

On October 9, RIA Novosti reported, citing Rospatent data, that Hyundai registered two Genesis trademarks in Russia with validity through 2034. On August 30, Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, told TASS that Kia and Hyundai could be among the first to resume selling vehicles in Russia if the political situation improves and sanctions become less stringent.

An automotive expert, Andrey Lomanov, told media that a return by Hyundai and Kia to the Russian market is possible but would require significant effort. He noted that without establishing full-cycle production facilities, the companies would face substantial challenges in their comeback efforts.
