A powerful explosion involving a car near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, India, killed at least eight people and injured more than a dozen others during the evening rush hour on Monday.
The blast occurred close to the Red Fort metro station, in a densely populated area that leads to the large bazaars of Old Delhi. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene after the incident was reported around 6:55 p.m. local time.
The Red Fort, or Lal Quila, is a major historical landmark and tourist attraction, making the surrounding area consistently crowded, particularly during peak hours.
Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi confirmed that at least eight people died in the explosion. Local media reports indicated that between 11 and 12 people were also wounded and transported for medical treatment.
Fire units were deployed to the site after reports of the explosion and subsequent fire. The flames damaged several vehicles parked nearby, including at least six cars and three motorcycles, according to police reports. Footage broadcast by Indian television channels showed a large column of smoke and fire next to partially burned vehicles, alongside a massive presence of police and emergency responders.
Authorities immediately cordoned off the area surrounding the blast site. Security officials stated that the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown and is under investigation. "We are investigating the causes of the explosion," spokesperson Tyagi told reporters, adding that authorities were not ruling out any hypothesis regarding the nature of the blast.
In the immediate aftermath, security alerts were raised across major Indian cities. Local television channels reported that a state of maximum alert was declared in the capital, New Delhi, as well as in the financial hub of Mumbai.
The neighboring region of Uttar Pradesh was also placed on high alert. Provincial officials instructed senior personnel to increase security measures at religious sites, sensitive districts, and border areas throughout Uttar Pradesh. Police patrols and checkpoints were reportedly increased across all districts in the region following the incident.
