World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy, after medical examinations confirmed he sustained an edema in his right hamstring, the Spanish tennis federation and the player announced Tuesday.
Alcaraz, 22, who was scheduled to lead the Spanish team in the Final 8 competition, said he was advised by doctors not to compete to prevent further injury. Spain is set to face the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
"I'm so sorry to announce that I won't be able to play for Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna," Alcaraz wrote on social media. "I have edema in my right hamstring and the medical recommendation is not to compete."
The injury occurred during the ATP Finals championship match in Turin on Sunday, where Alcaraz lost to Jannik Sinner. Although the Spaniard took a medical timeout during the first set, he completed the match. Alcaraz traveled to Bologna on Monday to join his teammates, but subsequent medical tests revealed a "significant muscle overload with marked edema in the hamstring" of his right leg, according to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET).
The world number one expressed deep disappointment over the necessary withdrawal. "I've always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was really looking forward to helping fight for the Davis Cup," he wrote, adding that he was "going home heartbroken."
The spaniard confirmed he would return home to begin recovery immediately to ensure he is ready for the pre-season training schedule and the start of the next year. His absence deals a significant blow to Spain's hopes of winning the Davis Cup trophy. His withdrawal also means the tournament will be missing the top two ranked players in the world.
World No. 2 Jannik Sinner previously announced he would not participate for the host nation, Italy. With both Alcaraz and Sinner out, Germany's Alexander Zverev, ranked World No. 3, is now the only top-10 player remaining in the eight-team finals field.
Spain's team captain, David Ferrer, will now rely on players including Jaume Munar and Pablo Carreno Busta for the singles matches against the Czech Republic.
