A Boeing 737 operated by Aerolíneas Argentinas and an Airbus A321 flown by Latam collided on the tarmac at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Aerolíneas Argentinas flight, designated AR1287, was stationary and awaiting clearance to depart for Buenos Aires' Aeroparque when the Latam aircraft struck it from behind during a taxiing maneuver to reposition on the runway. According to passenger accounts, the Latam plane's left wing made contact with the rear section of the Argentine aircraft.
The impact caused damage to the stabilizer bar of the Aerolíneas Argentinas plane, a component critical to flight stability. The aircraft was immediately taken out of service and subjected to technical inspection by maintenance personnel.
The Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil, Chile's civil aviation authority, confirmed that no passengers were injured in the collision. All passengers aboard both aircraft were evacuated to the terminal without incident.
The Latam flight had been maneuvering to depart for São Paulo when the collision occurred. Both flights were subsequently suspended, and passengers were rebooked on alternative services.
