Multiple law enforcement agencies responded Thursday afternoon to reports of an active shooter at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the FBI both confirmed their presence at the scene. Sheriff Michael Bouchard of Oakland County said the incident occurred just after 12:30 p.m. An attacker apparently rammed a vehicle into the synagogue, and a security guard engaged the individual in gunfire, authorities said.
"At least one individual came to the temple, security saw him, engaged him in gunfire," Sheriff Bouchard said at a news conference. He added that no one else appeared to have been injured in the incident. "Nobody at the moment has been confirmed to be hurt, except potentially the shooter," the sheriff said.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that FBI personnel were on scene responding to what he described as an apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation.
Temple Israel is located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road near the intersection of Walnut Lake and Drake roads. The synagogue is home to a preschool, and Sheriff Bouchard said everyone had been moved out of the school building. The Jewish Community Center was designated as a location where parents of Temple Israel students could meet with their children.
Sheriff Bouchard said officials had not identified the suspect as of the time of his statement and that it was too early to determine any motive. He also noted that the suspect was not in custody as of approximately 1:35 p.m. Thursday.
Area residents within a mile of the location were asked to shelter in place. Sheriff Bouchard urged those not already in the area to stay away. "Don't come to the area. It's active, it's busy," he said.
Aerial footage broadcast by local media showed black smoke emerging from the area of the synagogue. The incident remained under active investigation by multiple agencies.
