San Diego police responded to a reported active shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday around noon, according to the San Diego Police Department. The mosque is located in the 7000 block of Eckstrom Avenue in the Clairemont area, approximately 9 miles north of downtown San Diego.

Officer Anthony Carrasco said police believe people have been shot. At least three people were killed in the incident, according to local affiliate KGTV.

Police said the threat was "neutralized" and that significant resources had been deployed to the location. Authorities established a reunification location at San Diego Clairemont Seventh-Day Adventist Church nearby. Aerial television footage showed dozens of police cars in the area, with many streets closed.

The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to its website. The facility is located in a heavily residential neighborhood. Two schools are within close proximity to the mosque: the Islamic School of San Diego and the Kavod Charter School. Aerial footage showed school children being evacuated from the area, holding hands as they left.

Police urged residents to avoid the Eckstrom Avenue area. It was not immediately clear if shots had been fired or what other details surrounded the incident.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria posted on X that he was aware of the active shooter situation and was continuing to receive updates from law enforcement. "Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area," he said.

Governor Gavin Newsom's office said he was being briefed on the situation. "We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities," his office said.
