A 33-year-old mother of five was killed and a 34-year-old man was wounded in a shooting outside a bar in Crown Heights early Sunday morning, police said.
Gunfire erupted just before 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bergen Street and Howard Avenue, outside the Ooh La La Lounge and Bar. According to the NYPD, a dispute broke out near the establishment, and shots were fired during the altercation. A large crowd had gathered at the intersection at the time.
The victim, identified as Sofronie Hartzog of Gravesend, Brooklyn, was shot in the back. She ran inside the bar seeking help and was transported to Brookdale University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police described her as an innocent bystander who was not believed to be the shooter's intended target.
The 34-year-old man was struck once in the abdomen. He was transported to Kings County Hospital by private means and is expected to survive. He is in stable condition, according to police.
Surveillance video captured the moment of the shooting, showing people running for cover as multiple gunshots rang out. Police recovered multiple shell casings from the scene while searching for witnesses and additional video evidence.
The NYPD has not announced any arrests. Investigators are continuing their work on the case and are actively searching for the suspected gunman and any other potential suspects involved in the shooting.
