Luigi Mangione is scheduled to return to court Tuesday for a pre-trial conference ahead of jury selection in his state murder case, which is set to begin September 8.
Prosecutors allege that Mangione killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in an assassination-style killing on a Midtown Manhattan street in December 2024. Mangione has pleaded not guilty in separate state and federal cases.

In April 2026, Judge Gregory Carro delayed the start of the state trial from June to September 8, following a request from the defense. At the same time, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett postponed the federal trial from September to October, with jury selection scheduled to begin October 5 and presentation of evidence on October 26.
Judge Garnett noted at an April hearing that the federal case was "somewhat at the mercy of events in the state case," explaining the coordination between the two proceedings.
In the two months since Mangione's last appearance in state court, his defense lawyers withdrew plans to argue he was experiencing an "extreme emotional disturbance," according to court records.
