Luigi Mangione appeared in Manhattan federal court Monday for a pre-trial hearing where a judge set his federal trial to begin in January 2027.
Judge Margaret Garnett announced that jury selection will commence on January 5, 2027, with opening statements scheduled for January 25. The judge indicated that calling in approximately 40 to 50 potential jurors per day will be necessary for the selection process.
Mangione stands accused of killing UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, on a city street. He faces stalking counts in the federal proceedings and has pleaded not guilty. In his state-level case, he is charged with murder and weapons offenses, with that trial scheduled for September 8.
Judge Garnett had previously considered holding the federal trial in November but determined that timeline would not be feasible given jury selection requirements. Assistant United States Attorney Dominic A. Gentile moved to exclude a speedy trial in the federal case.
Mangione was initially indicted on murder and weapons charges in the federal case as well, but those counts were dropped earlier this year, removing the possibility of the death penalty. His defense strategy remains unclear as the cases proceed through the courts.
