One person was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at San Pedro Square in San Jose, California, on Sunday, authorities said. The entertainment venue has been hosting a World Cup "fan zone" screening matches throughout the tournament.
San Jose police said one victim was pronounced deceased at the scene, while a second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated as a homicide, police said in a post on social media platform X.
There were no World Cup games being screened at the time of the shooting. The only match scheduled for Sunday in the tournament finished around 2 p.m. local time, several hours before the incident occurred.
Several surrounding streets in the area were closed following the shooting as the investigation proceeded. San Pedro Square is one of several locations in the San Francisco Bay Area where crowds have gathered for watch parties showing World Cup matches during the tournament.
