Woman killed, man wounded in shooting outside Brooklyn bar

A 33-year-old woman was killed and a 34-year-old man was wounded in a shooting early Sunday outside a bar in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around 2:20 to 2:33 a.m. at the intersection of Bergen Street and Howard Avenue, near Ooh La La Lounge and Bar. Police said approximately 100 people had gathered near the establishment when a dispute broke out and escalated into gunfire.

The woman, identified as Sofronie Hartzog of Gravesend, Brooklyn, was struck in the back. Emergency medical workers transported her to Brookdale University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Hartzog was a mother of five children.

The 34-year-old man was shot once in the abdomen. He made his own way to Kings County Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Police said both victims appear to have been innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. According to police sources, the woman does not appear to have been the intended target of the shooting.

As of Sunday, no arrests had been made and the investigation remained ongoing, authorities said.
