Elon Musk's xAI launches Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia competing with Wikipedia
Elon Musk's xAI launched Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia positioned as a less biased alternative to Wikipedia, despite a rocky start.

Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence company, xAI, launched an early version of an AI-powered online encyclopedia called Grokipedia on Monday, October 27, 2025. The project is intended to serve as a direct competitor to Wikipedia, which Musk and some U.S. Republicans have frequently criticized for alleged ideological bias and "woke" content.
The new service, named after xAI's large language model Grok, was presented as version 0.1. Musk stated on his social media platform X that Grokipedia's objective is "to say the truth, the whole truth and nothing more than the truth," adding that while it would never be perfect, the company would strive for that goal.
Grokipedia's content is generated primarily by artificial intelligence and the Grok generative AI assistant. Upon its launch, the platform tallied more than 800,000 or 885,000 definitions or entries. This contrasts sharply with Wikipedia, which maintains nearly eight million human-written entries in English.
The launch of the website was initially turbulent, with the site temporarily crashing before coming back online hours later. Musk had previously announced the project in late September but delayed the launch by several days, citing the need for "supplementary work to eliminate the propaganda."
Musk promised the imminent arrival of version 1.0, which he claimed would be "ten times better" than the current iteration, asserting that version 0.1 was already superior to Wikipedia in his view.
Musk has regularly criticized Wikipedia, previously lambasting the platform for citing news outlets such as The New York Times and NPR in many of its articles. Grokipedia is intended to offer a perspective that is less "woke" and more conservative on controversial current events.
Early observations of Grokipedia entries indicated that while many pages were similar to Wikipedia in tone and content, a number of notable entries highlighted conservative viewpoints, denounced mainstream media, and in some cases, pushed far-right talking points. For instance, an entry on Musk himself described his public persona as blending "innovative visionary with irreverent provocateur."
Grokipedia's design is minimalist, bearing a resemblance to Wikipedia, and includes an index for longer entries. Although the content is AI-generated, the platform cites multiple sources on each page.
The platform allows for user input and correction. Users can register using their X credentials and suggest edits by selecting a phrase they believe is erroneous, marking it "It's wrong," and adding a correction supported by a link. The launch of Grokipedia follows a suggestion made by David Sacks, a fellow tech mogul who serves as the AI and crypto czar for U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.
