Iran wants to build new nuclear power plants in cooperation with Russia, Alexei Likhachev, the chief executive of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, said Tuesday.
"They have the desire, without a doubt," Likhachev told RIA Novosti when asked about the possibility of constructing additional nuclear reactor units in Iran jointly with Rosatom, for which future contracts would be needed.
Iran currently operates a single nuclear power plant located in Bushehr. Rosatom has been planning the construction of two additional reactor units at the Bushehr facility.
Earlier, Iran's atomic energy organization reported that the United States had attacked a site being prepared for a nuclear power plant. Representatives of the organization condemned Washington's actions in response to the reported strike.
The statement from Likhachev comes as Russia and Iran have maintained cooperation on nuclear energy projects despite international sanctions and geopolitical tensions in the region.
