David Beckham received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, becoming the first soccer player to be honored with the award. The 51-year-old former England captain and Inter Miami co-owner had his name added to Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles in a ceremony attended by his wife Victoria, three of their children—Romeo, Cruz, and Harper—and American actor Tom Cruise.

The ceremony took place in the sports entertainment category. Rather than a traditional red carpet, organizers featured a green soccer-themed carpet to commemorate the occasion. Beckham described the moment as "surreal" during remarks at the event.

Tom Cruise, a longtime friend of Beckham, served as a guest speaker and praised the former athlete's career and work ethic. "Long before the trophies, the sold-out stadiums, the global fame, the recognition, there was a young boy with a dream — and the determination and discipline to earn everything that followed," Cruise said at the podium. He also characterized Beckham's journey as "a Hollywood story" of hard work, determination, and global influence on sport and culture. Cruise noted that he first met Beckham in 2007, when the soccer star signed with Los Angeles Galaxy.

In his own remarks, Beckham reflected on his connection to the United States. "I've lived amazing moments throughout my career, but being here in Los Angeles, receiving a star on the world-famous Walk of Fame is truly incredible," he said. Beckham credited American cinema, the way the country views sport as entertainment, and figures like Michael Jordan with drawing him closer to the United States over the years. He noted that Jordan was the reason he wore the number 23 and that Jordan demonstrated "you can be more than just an athlete."

Beckham spent much of his playing career at Europe's largest clubs. He graduated from Manchester United's academy before signing for Real Madrid in 2003. He had brief stints with AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain before his career wound down. His move to LA Galaxy in 2007 marked a significant moment for soccer in the United States and increased his profile stateside. He is currently a co-owner of Inter Miami, which joined Major League Soccer.

According to sources, Beckham is among only a handful of athletes to be honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and the first from soccer—a sport that remains relatively niche in the United States compared to other major sports.
