Daveigh Chase, the former child star best known for voicing Lilo in "Lilo & Stitch" and playing Samara Morgan in "The Ring," died of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, according to a Los Angeles County Medical Examiner report obtained Monday.
Chase died June 16 at age 35. The medical examiner listed AIDS as the primary cause of death, with chronic polysubstance use—the repeated use of more than one drug over time—noted as a significant contributing condition. The manner of death was ruled natural.
Her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, had initially reported that Chase died following complications related to meningitis and sepsis after spending several days in the hospital. She had been diagnosed with meningitis and several serious blood infections that caused her body to become septic, he said.
Chase's death came nearly two weeks before the official cause was disclosed. The actress had faced years of struggles with drug addiction and homelessness prior to her death, according to reports.
Hernandez had created a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the late actress during her final days.
