Tom Cruise will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in a new sequel to the 1990 film "Days of Thunder," nearly four decades after the original movie's release. Paramount Pictures and the actors announced the project on August 29 through social media.
Anne Hathaway will join Cruise in the sequel, playing the owner and engineer of a racing team. Cruise will also serve as a producer on the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.
Jonathan Levine, director of "Warm Bodies," "50/50," and "Long Shot," will helm the project. Will Staples, who is also writing a forthcoming drama starring Chris Pratt titled "Way of the Warrior Kid," will write the screenplay.
The film will be shot for IMAX technology and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 2, 2028. Cruise and Hathaway announced the project at Daytona International Speedway in the United States, sharing a photo together next to a race car bearing the inscription "Days of Thunder 2."
In a video released by both actors, Hathaway joked with Cruise about when they would make the film. Hathaway, who is pregnant, said she would have her baby before filming begins.
The original "Days of Thunder" was released in 1990 under the direction of Tony Scott and centered on the NASCAR racing universe.
