Brazilian club Flamengo secured the Copa Libertadores 2025 title on Saturday, defeating rivals Palmeiras in the final held at the Estadio Monumental in Lima, Perú. The victory marks Flamengo's fourth championship in the tournament, making them the most successful Brazilian club in the competition's history.

The win carried significant historical weight for Brazilian football, as it was the seventh consecutive edition won by a club from the country. With this title, Brazilian teams collectively reached 25 Copa Libertadores championships, equaling the total held by Argentine clubs. Argentina's 25 titles are distributed among eight clubs, while Brazil's 25 titles are shared among 12 clubs. Flamengo now holds the same number of titles as Argentine clubs River Plate and Estudiantes de La Plata, who also have four championships each.

The historical parity between the two South American football powerhouses was cemented by Flamengo's victory. While Brazil now matches Argentina in total titles, the all-time individual club leaders remain Independiente (seven titles), Boca Juniors (six titles), and Peñarol of Montevideo (six titles).

By winning the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo secured qualification for two major international tournaments: the upcoming Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

The Intercontinental Cup, which features a final phase consisting of three key matches, will begin for Flamengo on December 10. In the match known as the "Derbi de las Américas", Flamengo, as the CONMEBOL champion, will face Cruz Azul of Mexico, the winner of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

The winner of that match will advance to the Copa Challenger de la FIFA on December 13, where they will play Pyramids, the Egyptian club that won the African Champions League 2024/25. Pyramids secured their place after defeating Auckland City 3-0 on September 14.

Flamengo also became the fifth team to secure a spot in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for 2029. They join four other confirmed continental champions: PSG (UEFA Champions League 2024/25 winner), Cruz Azul (Concachampions 2024/25 winner), Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia (AFC Champions League 2024/25 winner), and Pyramids of Egypt (African Champions League 24/25 winner). Authorities noted that a team from the host country, whose location has not yet been confirmed, will also participate.
