Arsenal in direct talks with Newcastle over Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal are in direct talks with Newcastle United to sign captain Bruno Guimarães, with the clubs now engaged in formal discussions after previous negotiations were conducted through intermediaries.

Guimarães, 28, wants to join Arsenal, the current Premier League champions. The midfielder has made clear his desire to leave Newcastle this transfer window to compete in the Champions League, a competition Newcastle did not qualify for.

Newcastle has rejected an initial offer from Arsenal, according to sources. The BBC reported that Arsenal's previous bid through intermediaries was worth £70 million, and the club is expected to return with an improved offer. According to TalkSport, negotiations are advancing despite the rejection, with bonuses under discussion between the two clubs.

Those involved in the transfer believe it is moving towards a resolution, though whether a deal will ultimately be agreed remains uncertain.

Guimarães had two years remaining on his Newcastle contract but informed the club of his intention to seek a transfer. The departure of Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has also contributed to the changed circumstances at the club. Newcastle has already signed Aladji Bamba from Monaco in anticipation of Guimarães's possible exit.

The midfielder was a standout performer at the 2026 World Cup for Brazil. He started in all of Brazil's matches and provided four assists during the tournament, though he missed a penalty in the round-of-16 match that resulted in Brazil's elimination by Norway.

In the Premier League last season, Guimarães was Newcastle's top scorer with nine goals across 41 appearances, including 37 starts. He also recorded seven assists in that campaign.
