FC Barcelona announced Tuesday that its legal department is studying statements made by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez during a press conference and is evaluating potential legal action in response.
In a brief statement issued through official channels, Barcelona said: "In reference to the press conference called by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, we inform you that our legal department is carefully studying his statements and accusations. At this time they are being analyzed and the next steps to follow are being evaluated. When deemed appropriate, we will properly inform of the positions and decisions that are adopted."
The Barcelona statement did not specify which particular accusations prompted the legal review. According to reports, Pérez accused the club of corruption, enriching referees, and consistently benefiting from officiating decisions, in reference to the so-called Negreira case involving Barcelona and a former referee.
Pérez held the press conference Tuesday afternoon at Real Madrid's training facility in Valdebebas following an emergency meeting of the club's board of directors. The 79-year-old president used the appearance to announce he would call for fresh elections at the club and confirm his candidacy to continue leading the organization.
During the conference, Pérez addressed multiple topics affecting the club, including a physical altercation between players Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni that occurred the previous week. Valverde was hospitalized with a head injury from the incident. Pérez stated that player conflicts occur regularly during his 26 years leading the club but said he was more concerned about the leak of information to the media than the fight itself.
"I find it very wrong and I find it worse that they have made it public," Pérez said. "I have been here 26 years and I can assure you that there is not a single year in which two or four players have not fought, but it stays within the house."
Pérez also criticized sections of the media, alleging an organized campaign against Real Madrid. He denied rumors of resignation and stated he requested the electoral board to begin the process for elections to the board of directors, to which his current board would present itself as candidates.
