Hugo Oliveira, manager of Portuguese club Famalicão, is among the candidates Botafogo is considering to replace Martín Anselmi, according to reporting Tuesday by Portuguese newspaper O Jogo. However, Oliveira declined contact from the Rio de Janeiro club, preferring to continue his work in Portugal.
Oliveira's contract with Famalicão runs until June 30, and the most likely scenario is that he will renew his agreement with the Portuguese side. Famalicão currently sits fifth in the Portuguese Championship this season with 13 wins and eight losses in 27 matches, having scored 33 goals and conceded 22.
Botafogo's list of managerial candidates also includes Fernando Diniz, who recently left Vasco da Gama; Hernán Crespo, former São Paulo manager; and Martín Palermo, a Boca Juniors icon. Oliveira is described as a coach with a profile similar to Artur Jorge, a figure revered at Botafogo.
Less than a week after his dismissal from Botafogo, Martín Anselmi has entered the radar of another club. According to TV Azteca Deportes, the Argentine manager is a strong candidate to take charge of Monterrey in Mexico, which is facing a sporting crisis and currently sits ninth in the Mexican Championship. Anselmi previously had a successful spell in Mexican football with Cruz Azul. Nicolás Sánchez is serving as interim manager at Monterrey.
