Denver Summit FC defeated NJ/NY Gotham FC 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Stadium in Centennial, Colorado, ending the league leaders' club-record 10-game unbeaten streak.
Gotham FC, which entered the match atop the NWSL standings with a five-point lead over second-place Washington Spirit, remained scoreless through the opening 45 minutes. Denver scored three times in the second half, with Yuzuki Yamamoto opening the scoring in the 50th minute. Olivia Thomas and Yazmeen Ryan added goals late in the match to secure the victory.
The loss marked Gotham FC's first defeat in over two months. Denver Summit became the second expansion team in league history to defeat the reigning champions twice in their inaugural season.
Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós, returning to the touchline following a five-week parental leave, acknowledged the setback. "It's disappointing," Amorós said. "We need to look at ourselves and make sure that we go against Louisville and get three points. We know how this league is. It's a very competitive one. It's very difficult to do what this team is doing in terms of an unbeaten run and winning every game. But losing a game can happen. It happens to all teams."
