Hundreds of euphoric supporters welcomed Egypt's national football team home Friday after the country's best performance at a World Cup. The team arrived at el-Alamein airport, where fans dressed in red, white and black filled the grounds outside the terminal.

The Pharaohs boarded an open-top bus for a parade through the coastal city. Supporters waved Egyptian and Palestinian flags in support of Gaza as the team made its way through the crowds.

Egypt's World Cup campaign ended this week with a last-16 exit to Argentina. The team lost 3-2 in a comeback victory for Argentina on Tuesday, July 7, in a match featuring a standout performance by Lionel Messi. Despite the elimination, Egypt achieved historic milestones in the tournament.

The squad reached the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time. Additionally, Egypt secured its first-ever victory in World Cup history, defeating New Zealand in the group stage.

The team's success was built around a roster featuring Mohamed Salah, Marmoush and Ziko, along with coach Hossam Hassam, who led the campaign.

The players are expected to meet President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Saturday. The president thanked the team on social media for its "honourable performance" at the tournament.
