Nicolás Fernández scored his 14th goal of the season Saturday night as New York City FC drew 1-1 with Toronto FC, though the result extended NYCFC's winless streak to five consecutive games.
Fernández opened the scoring in the 29th minute from a center-right position, darting left and rifling a low shot between two defenders and inside the right post from near the top of the penalty arc to give NYCFC a 1-0 lead.
Toronto equalized in the 70th minute when Dániel Sallói, who had been substituted on in the 55th minute, scored on a tap-in finish. Theo Corbeanu ran onto a long ball-ahead from Alonso Coello just outside the right edge of the penalty box on a counter-attack and played a first-touch cross to Sallói for the goal.
Matt Freese made five saves for NYCFC in the match played in Toronto.
The draw left NYCFC with a record of 7-8-7 as the club continues to struggle for form. Among MLS players this season, only Leo Messi with 20 goals and Petar Musa with 16 goals have scored more than Fernández's 14.
Toronto improved to 5-7-10 and remained unbeaten in its last five games. The club has won one game and lost one in its last eight matches, following a 2-1 home victory over New England on August 15 that ended a 12-game winless streak.
