Dániel Gazdag scored in the third minute of second-half stoppage time to give the New England Revolution a 2-1 victory over New York City FC on Wednesday night at Citi Field in Queens, New York.
Gazdag, who entered the match as a substitute in the 72nd minute, delivered a strike from the top of the box that eluded NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese's diving attempt. The goal came off a long cross from defender Ilay Feingold, with Brooklyn Raines also credited with an assist. It was Gazdag's first goal since joining the Revolution and came moments after an apparent go-ahead goal was disallowed for offside.
Carles Gil opened the scoring for New England with a penalty kick in the 12th minute, awarded after a foul on NYCFC defender Aiden O'Neill. Luighi Hanri Sousa Santos equalized for NYCFC in the 71st minute with his second goal in six league appearances, entering the match as a substitute in the 63rd minute. Nicolás Fernández provided the assist for Santos.
The victory improved New England's record to 12-8-4 with 40 points. NYCFC fell to 7-9-8 with 29 points. The result prevented what would have been a second 1-1 draw between the teams in 17 days.
Gazdag had three goals in 17 appearances with the Columbus Crew before joining the Revolution. It was the second assist of the season for both Feingold and Raines. Fernández recorded his seventh assist of the season on Santos's goal.
