Japan defeated Australia 1-0 Saturday to claim their third Women's Asian Cup title in front of a record crowd at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Maika Hamano, a Tottenham winger, scored the decisive goal in the 17th minute. She collected a pass from Yui Hasegawa on the edge of the penalty area, turned and struck a dipping effort into the corner of the net.

The victory marks Japan's first major trophy since 2018. They previously won the Women's Asian Cup in 2014 and 2018, both times defeating Australia by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Australia, the tournament hosts, created chances to equalize in the first half. Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord had an opportunity from a tight angle but was unable to capitalize. Moments earlier, Sam Kerr forced a save from Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita after receiving a pass from Foord in the penalty area.

The attendance of 74,357 set a new record for the Women's Asian Cup final. The tournament overall drew more than 350,000 fans through the turnstiles, approximately six times the previous tournament record, according to officials.

Japan reached the final as Asia's only Women's World Cup winners and were viewed as tournament favorites entering their seventh Asian Cup final. Australia, despite advancing through the group stage largely untested, presented a more formidable challenge from the opening whistle, with their supporters creating a roaring atmosphere at the venue.
