José Mourinho was officially presented as Real Madrid manager Tuesday at the club's training center in a closed-door ceremony, marking his return to the Spanish club after a 13-year absence.
The Portuguese coach signed a contract through June 2029 in a meeting room at Ciudad Real Madrid alongside club president Florentino Pérez and honorary president José Martínez Pirri. Mourinho had begun working with the squad when preseason training started July 10, but the formal presentation formalized his appointment.
"For me, Real Madrid, from a professional point of view, is the top of a coach's career and certainly also for any player," Mourinho said in remarks to the club's official channel. "Then there is the emotional, affective side, which is coming back home."
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013. He described his current return as emotionally more significant than his first stint with the club. "Emotionally, it is more beautiful than the first time I was here. I have always been one of you, since I left," he added.
Real Madrid enters the new LaLiga season after two consecutive years without winning a title. The club will begin its campaign against Espanyol on Saturday, August 22. Mourinho is scheduled to hold his first press conference Friday, August 21, one day before the match.
The presentation took place quietly, a departure from the club's typical public spectacle for major announcements. Mourinho's appointment had been announced two months prior to Tuesday's official ceremony.
