PSG defeats Aston Villa to win UEFA Super Cup for second straight year

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday in Salzburg, Austria, securing the club's second consecutive title in the competition and extending its trophy haul under manager Luis Enrique.

The match, contested at the Red Bull Arena, was an open affair with both teams frequently attacking and creating opportunities that could have produced a larger margin of victory. Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG early in the contest. Madjo equalized for Aston Villa late in the first half, setting up a competitive second period.

In the second half, Désiré Doué scored what proved to be the decisive goal. The goal initially appeared to be disallowed for offside when the assistant referee raised the flag, but video review overturned the decision and the goal stood. Doué's celebration was delayed as he awaited confirmation from the VAR system.

The Super Cup is a single-match competition between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League. PSG, as defending champions, faced Aston Villa, the Europa League winners. This marks the eighth consecutive year that the Champions League winner has claimed the Super Cup title.

PSG's victory represents the club's second Super Cup triumph in as many years. The team won the 2025 edition by defeating Tottenham on penalties.

Under Luis Enrique, who took charge in 2023, PSG has now won 13 titles. The club's trophy collection during his tenure includes two Champions League titles, one FIFA Club World Cup, three Ligue 1 championships, two Coupe de France trophies, and three French Super Cups, in addition to the two consecutive UEFA Super Cups.

Since Luis Enrique's arrival, PSG has failed to win two competitions: the 2025-26 Coupe de France and the Club World Cup held last year in the United States, where the team finished as runner-up after losing the final to Chelsea.
