Marc-André ter Stegen has been loaned to Ajax Amsterdam for the 2026-27 season, Barcelona announced Tuesday. The loan runs until June 30, 2027, with no option to buy.
The 34-year-old German goalkeeper remains under contract with Barcelona through 2028, but the loan is widely viewed as the beginning of his departure from the club after twelve seasons. Negotiations between the two clubs extended over several weeks, delayed by complications over the goalkeeper's salary—among the highest at Barcelona—and tax obligations arising from his employment in two different countries. The agreement was finalized in late July once both clubs reached a formula to share the financial burden.
Ter Stegen said goodbye to his Barcelona teammates and coaching staff led by Hansi Flick on Friday before leaving the club's training camp in England and traveling to Amsterdam.
