Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for £85 million in guaranteed fees, according to multiple sources briefed on the deal.
The 21-year-old has agreed to join the north London club after Spurs made the highest offer in a competitive process. The fee, valued at €98 million and $112 million, represents a guaranteed payment without additional add-ons, distinguishing it from other offers on the table.
Manchester United had also pursued Fernandes but withdrew from the race. The club determined that both the transfer fee and the player's salary demands exceeded their valuation, and officials said the player did not clearly express a preference to join them during negotiations.
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain had also registered interest in the midfielder, but Tottenham's offer proved decisive in securing his services.
Fernandes joined West Ham last summer for £40 million and made an immediate impact at the club. His performances attracted attention from several major European sides during the current transfer window.
The club had previously targeted Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali with an £80 million offer, which was rejected by the northeast England club.
Spurs have already made four signings ahead of the 2026-27 season. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will join on a free transfer once his contract with Burnley expires on July 1. The 37-year-old Slovakia international follows defensive reinforcements Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, both acquired on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively. The club also signed Netherlands defender in recent weeks as part of their summer recruitment drive.
Fernandes becomes Tottenham's marquee midfield acquisition of the transfer window, addressing a key area of the squad as manager Ange Postecoglou continues to reshape the team's composition.
