Deniz Undav scored twice as Germany defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday in a World Cup Group E match, securing the four-time champions' place in the knockout stage for the first time since winning the tournament in 2014.

Ivory Coast took the lead through Franck Kessié's goal in the 30th minute. Germany had two goals disallowed in the first half and trailed for much of the match, appearing outplayed by the West Africans' dynamic attacking football.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann made substitutions an hour into the game, bringing on three fresh players including Undav. The Stuttgart striker equalized in the 68th minute with a close-range finish, then secured victory with a stoppage-time goal in the 94th minute.

"It's important that everyone sees that even the players from the bench can decide games," Undav said after the match.

Germany's comeback was only the second of the tournament after South Korea's victory against the Czech Republic. The win put Germany on six points and top of Group E.

Nagelsmann's substitution strategy proved decisive. Felix Nmecha continued his strong form during the match, while Jamie Leweling made an impact off the bench alongside Undav.

The match was played in Toronto on Saturday. Germany's bench emptied in celebration after Undav's final goal, with fans behind the goal throwing themselves in all directions at the injury-time winner.
