German authorities discover third drone near Leipzig airport with explosives

German authorities discovered a third unmanned aerial vehicle near Leipzig/Halle Airport, along with suspected military explosives, local media reported on August 25. The drone was found in a field in Kabelsketal, Saxony-Anhalt, directly adjacent to the airport's western side, on August 14.

Forensic investigators from Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office identified approximately 50 grams of RDX, a highly explosive compound, at the site. According to reports, the substance failed to detonate, and experts are investigating why the explosive did not ignite.

The discovery of this third drone follows two earlier findings at the airport in early August. Investigators believe several drones were used in what authorities describe as an attempted attack. The first drone was found at the airport itself, while a second apparently struck a DHL aircraft.

Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a cargo and military logistics hub used by NATO and Ukraine's Antonov Airlines for transporting military supplies. Sources close to the investigation indicated to German media that the drones found at the airport, some of which were detected near Ukrainian aircraft, are believed to be connected.

The prosecutor general's office is leading the investigation into the incidents. As of August 25, no responsibility for the attempted attack had been attributed.
