A shooting at a youth welfare facility in the northern German city of Stade left six people dead on Monday, according to police.

Five people died at the scene of the shooting, which took place on Dankersstrasse, a street south of the town center. A sixth person died later at a hospital from injuries sustained in the incident. All victims were adults. Among those killed were five women and one man, according to authorities.

The facility where the shooting occurred provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children. Several other people were wounded in the shooting, though police did not provide an exact number of injured.

Police arrested two people in connection with the incident, including the suspected shooter. A police spokesperson said there were no other suspects on the run. Authorities said there was no ongoing danger to the public, though police initially advised residents to steer clear of the area and follow instructions from emergency services.

Stade is located approximately 27 miles west of Hamburg. Local councillor Carsten Brokelmann noted that a daycare center and elementary school were located near the shooting site.

Police said they were working to establish the background to the shooting and what exactly happened. A police representative said investigators do not believe the incident was an act of terrorism, though the motive remained unclear at the time of reporting.
