Two killed in shooting at school near Berlin

Two people were killed in a shooting at a private secondary school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, a town in Brandenburg near Berlin, on Wednesday.

The victims were an 18-year-old student and a 30-year-old teacher. According to local media reports, the teacher died while attempting to intervene during the incident. A 19-year-old male suspect was arrested at the scene.

Brandenburg police confirmed on social media that they had detained the suspect "following an act of violence" and were securing the crime scene. The suspect is believed to be the ex-boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim, according to reporting by Maz Online. It remains unclear whether the suspect was a student at the school.

The incident occurred at Docemus, a private secondary school that opened in 2008. Emergency services deployed multiple vehicles and two rescue helicopters to the area surrounding the school.

Michael Kunz, the school's managing director, said classes would be cancelled on Friday. "Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot and will not provide any information regarding the specific circumstances and sequence of events at this time," Kunz told local media. He added that although regular classes would not take place, the school would remain open to students.

Police described the operation as extensive and confirmed they were investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
