Explosion and fire hit ammunition plant near Rome

An explosion struck an ammunition manufacturing plant near Rome on Wednesday, igniting a fire that has complicated containment efforts, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

The facility, located in southern Rome, is the former Sammel Difesa ammunition factory now operated by defense company KNDS Ammo Italy. The plant produces medium- and large-caliber ammunition.

The explosion triggered a fire at the site. Several firefighting crews responded and are currently working to contain the blaze, though efforts remain difficult due to the intensity of the flames, which are preventing firefighters from approaching the facility closely.

No immediate reports of casualties or injuries have been disclosed. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the cause of the explosion or the extent of damage to the facility.
