Investigators in Italy have reopened inquiries into a series of killings attributed to an unidentified serial killer known as the "Monster of Modena," more than three decades after the crimes occurred.
Between 1985 and 1995, at least eight young women were killed in the province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region. The victims shared common characteristics: they were involved in drug use and sex work. The bodies of some were discovered abandoned in ditches and canals throughout the province. The murders were carried out using different methods, though investigators have long suspected a single perpetrator was responsible.
The reopening of the investigation was initiated following a request from the family of Anna Maria Palermo, one of the victims, through her attorney. Palermo was killed on January 26, 1994, at age 20. Her family's petition prompted authorities to revisit the case files.
Police and carabinieri officers, acting on orders from the prosecutor's office, have begun reviewing the original investigative documents. In recent days, investigators visited the Modena medical examiner's office to assess which physical evidence collected at the crime scenes could be subjected to new analysis using contemporary forensic techniques.
The potential range of killings may extend beyond the established eight victims, as authorities are considering two additional suspicious deaths that could potentially be linked to the same perpetrator. However, this connection remains unverified.
During the original investigation period, authorities pursued leads connected to the drug trade, given the victims' involvement in that environment. No suspect was ever identified or charged in connection with the killings, leaving the cases unsolved for decades.
The renewed investigation aims to leverage advances in genetic analysis and fingerprint technology that were unavailable when the crimes were originally investigated. Forensic methods have evolved significantly since the 1980s and 1990s, potentially allowing investigators to extract and analyze evidence that could not be processed with earlier techniques.
