A black bear injured four people across two factories and a residential area in Fukushima, northeastern Japan, on Tuesday, according to prefectural police and media reports.
The bear first struck at the Fukushima Steel Works company, where it attacked two employees. Police and fire department officials responded after receiving an emergency call reporting that employees had been bitten. Security camera footage from the facility showed the bear chasing and attacking a person on the company's premises.
As the rampage continued, the bear attacked a man in his 60s at a separate electronic equipment manufacturer nearby. The animal then attacked a woman in her 80s in a residential area adjacent to the factory. One of the victims sustained heavy injuries, while the rest experienced only mild injuries. All four injured persons remained conscious.
The bear had not been located or captured by authorities as of Tuesday afternoon. Police and fire officials believed the animal remained inside one of the factory premises.
Bear attacks have increased in Japan as the animals emerge hungry from hibernation. A record 13 people were killed by bears in Japan last year, according to authorities. The spike in incidents has prompted heightened concern about human-wildlife encounters in affected regions.
