Lindsey Vonn posted a video message from her hospital bed Friday, updating supporters on her recovery following a crash during the women's downhill at the Milan Cortina Olympics. The three-time Olympic medalist said she is scheduled for another surgery Saturday, her fourth since the incident.
Vonn crashed 13 seconds into the race after hitting a gate and was airlifted from the Olympic course to Ca' Foncello Hospital in Treviso. She sustained a complex fracture of her tibia in her left leg.
In the nearly two-minute video posted to Instagram, where she has 3.3 million followers, Vonn thanked supporters for flowers, letters, and gifts sent during her hospital stay. "It's been quite a hard few days in the hospital here," she said. "I'm finally feeling more like myself but I have a long, long way to go."
Vonn explained the next steps in her treatment. "Tomorrow I'll have another surgery and hopefully that goes well and then I can potentially leave and go back at home," she said. "At which point, I'll need another surgery. Still don't know exactly what that entails yet until I get some better imaging."
The 41-year-old American skier has already undergone three surgeries since the crash during the opening weekend of the Games. She noted that she remains hospitalized and in significant pain, but said she has been receiving visits from friends and family members.
