TORONTO — The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 in a tense Game 6 Friday night, forcing a decisive Game 7 in the World Series. The victory, secured in Toronto, keeps the Dodgers' hopes alive for consecutive championships.
The Dodgers are attempting to become the first franchise since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees to win back-to-back World Series titles, a feat that now requires them to win one more game on the road in Toronto. This matchup marks the first Game 7 in the Fall Classic since the 2019 series between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals.
The Dodgers' offense struggled significantly in the opening innings against Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman. Gausman struck out four of the first five batters he faced, and cleanup hitter Mookie Betts was forced into a groundout. The offensive woes continued into the top of the third inning when Gausman struck out Kiké Hernández.
However, the Dodgers found their momentum shortly thereafter. Tommy Edman broke the offensive drought with a line-drive double to right field. Although Gausman briefly recovered by striking out Miguel Rojas, the pitcher found himself in a precarious position as the inning continued.
Dramatic Ninth-Inning Finish
The 3-1 score held until the bottom of the ninth inning, which culminated in a heart-stopping finish for both teams. Dodgers closer Roki Sasaki was battered by the Blue Jays lineup, appearing on the verge of surrendering a walk-off championship victory.
Toronto outfielder Addison Barger hit a ground-rule double, placing two runners in scoring position with zero outs. This forced the Dodgers to call upon starter Tyler Glasnow for emergency relief, despite the fact that he was slated to pitch in the potential Game 7.
Glasnow, who burst into a smile on the mound after the final out, managed to escape the jam. He secured the first out with a one-pitch pop-up from third baseman Ernie Clement. The game ended when Toronto infielder Andrés Giménez was involved in the final play, which saw Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas sprawl across the dirt to secure the baseball firmly in his glove, ending the threat and the game.
