Peter Mangione, a 24-year-old midfielder from Hunt Valley, Maryland, has signed a contract with Brooklyn FC for its USL Championship roster, the team announced Wednesday. Mangione is the cousin of Luigi Mangione, who is facing trial as the alleged assassin of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione will play for Brooklyn FC, located miles from the jail where his cousin is being held. A Penn State University product, Mangione compiled 31 career goals during his time with the Nittany Lions and earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors twice, in 2021 and 2023.
During his college career, Mangione was named vice captain of Penn State's men's soccer team in 2021. Former Penn State soccer coach Jeff Cook described Mangione as having "made significant contributions to our Penn State men's soccer program both on and off the field."
Before joining Brooklyn FC, Mangione spent the previous two seasons with FC Cincinnati 2 of Major League Soccer's second-tier affiliate.
