Sharyn Alfonsi, a veteran correspondent for CBS News's 60 Minutes, has accused the network of penalizing her for "refusing to sanitize factually accurate reporting" after the company declined to renew her contract for the program's 59th season beginning in the fall.

Alfonsi's contract expired Saturday. She confirmed to the Guardian that she had not been offered a contract to return to the show. A source close to Alfonsi said her team had not heard from CBS recently.

The correspondent was at the center of a national controversy after CBS News editor-in-chief shelved a segment she had reported on a notorious prison in El Salvador. In a statement last month, Alfonsi decried what she called "the spread of corporate meddling" at the network.

In her recent comments, Alfonsi said the network's decision to not renew her contract sends "a chilling message" to the newsroom. She remains employed by CBS News and has said she has no plans to resign.
