A gunman killed a Canadian woman and injured six others at Mexico's Teotihuacán pyramids on Monday before fatally shooting himself, according to Mexico's security cabinet.
The shooting occurred at the pre-Hispanic archaeological site located outside Mexico City, a major tourist and cultural destination. Authorities said the gunman fired from atop the Pyramid of the Moon in the presence of tourists at the site.
Video footage circulated on social media showed a man firing shots from one of the ancient pyramids while dozens of tourists took cover among the pre-Hispanic ruins and others fled the area.
Mexico's security cabinet confirmed that six people were injured in the incident and were receiving medical care. Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and ammunition from the scene.
The motive for the shooting remained unknown as of Monday evening. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X that the incident "deeply pains us" and stated she was closely monitoring the situation. She added that her government was in contact with the Canadian embassy.
"I have instructed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these events and provide all necessary support," Sheinbaum said. "Personnel from the Secretariat of the Interior and Culture are already heading to the site to provide assistance and accompaniment, along with local authorities."
Canada's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the death of the Canadian national.
